Best Expedition Awards 2012

A lot of interest was generated by our launch of an Award Scheme for Best Expedition and Best Photography, last year. For 2012, we decided to extend the categories, having separate awards for Volunteer Reserves, University Officer Training Corps, and for Cadets.

We were delighted to announce the following Awards for 2012, which were this year presented at local ceremonies:

Reserve Units:

  • Best Expedition: 4 YORKS – Ex Northern Yorkshire Splash.
An ambitious, demanding diving expedition to Ascension Island, well executed with some impressive outcomes, at modest cost.
  • Best Photography: 299 Para Sqn RE – Ex Himalayan Sapper 2012.
299 Sqn’s ascent of Island Peak in the Himalayas with largely a team of novices was also a very good project – with imagery that nicely conveys the challenge.

UOTCs:

  • Best Expedition: E Midlands UOTC – Ex Illimani Sunrise 2012
E Midlands UOTC’s expedition to Bolivia was ambitious and successful, including a number of high altitude first ascents in a little explored area of the Bolivian Andes. The outstanding expedition that we supported in 2012.
  • Best Imagery: Oxford University OTC – Ex Blue Bivio 2
Oxford UOTC’s Alpine ski tour imagery well illustrated what such expeditions are about. Led by Reservist Capt Tania Noakes, about to qualify as an International Mountain Guide.

Cadets

  • Best Expedition: Marine Society and Sea Cadets – Ex Scots Paddle The Great Glen 2012.
A demanding expedition, excellently completed in the face of sometimes appalling weather. A fine example of what can be done without expensive travel to exotic parts of the world. Supported by a well written and illustrated report.
  • Best Photography: London Wing ATC – Tanzania Ngorongo Crater 2012.
Excellent pictures convey a great story of a tough trek combined with some imaginative community work supported by Arsenal FC. Also received the Shackleton Trophy, awarded by the Foundation to the Air Cadet unit that undertakes the best overseas expedition.
