Mountaineering Expedition ‘Shrivenham Ibex’, Slovenia, July 2007

Trojan Squadron - Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme (Newcastle)

The group

'Shrivenham Ibex' was a mountaineering expedition in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Eight Officer Cadets from Trojan Squadron and one instructor set out with the aim of completing a trek from East to West encompassing some of Slovenia’s highest peaks. The route began at the town of Bled and finished in Bovec in the Soca Valley. The group flew into Ljublijana Airport and caught the bus up to Bled. The first night was spent in a Hostel, Jakelj, and after a good night’s sleep and a large breakfast the group was keen to get started.

The first day was pretty hard going. The track wound its way through forests and with no breeze the humidity took some getting used to. Eventually, however, we emerged in the mountains to be greeted by some truly spectacular views. The following days’ walking were much more enjoyable as the route snaked over peaks and ridges revealing magnificent scenery in every direction.

After completing the expedition route, the group spent time relaxing on the shores or Lake Bled and enjoying the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Soca River.

The Officer Cadets learnt valuable map reading skills as well as personal administration and self reliance whilst on the expedition which will help in their Initial Officer Training in the future. As importantly, however, a thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all.
