RGS, Guildford CCF
During February half-term, 19 members of the RGS Guildford CCF from all 3 services took part in a Winter Adventurous training programme in Bavaria. All went well on the journey until our initial flight was cancelled and then our replacement flight had to abort its initial landing into Munich, both due to poor weather conditions. We did finally arrive in Munich and made our way to Sonthofen - a journey of 2 hours that, due to 30cm of fresh snow and -15oC conditions, actually took 6!
The first day was spent at the Nebelhorn with an introduction to alpine skiing for the beginners and on-piste improvement for those with experience. It was a blue sky day, with empty slopes and enjoyed by all. The second day saw the team at the Fellhorn Langlauf loop learning how to cross-country ski. The challenging day ended with a hot chocolate stop further up the valley followed by fun and games (on langlauf skis) with the result feeding into the week’s platoon competition.
The next day the team donned snow shoes and broke trail from Iffen to the Schwarzwasser hutte. On arrival and having eaten supper, the team went out for a Fackel Walk which involved treking further through the mountains with flaming torches. The next day, the team successfully completed a snow shoe ascent of the Helikopf (2100m).
The final two days were spent skiing on and off-piste at the Fellhorn, as well as contructing snow shelters in off-piste areas. All boys appreciated the excellent tuition from Sam Burns, Glyn Shepherd and Derek Barber from pointVenture (our operators in Germany).
R&R was spent playing pool in the American Diner under our hotel (Hotel Bauer) and swimming in the Wonnemar as well as some excellent evening lectures from our guides.
